Enchanted Rock at Sunrise
Enchanted Rock at Sunrise
Hour and a half northwest of San Antonio, near Fredericksburg. A pink granite dome rising from the Hill Country — the Summit Trail is steep and exposed but the top rewards with 360-degree views of Texas that rearrange expectations. The rock glows pink at dawn, intensifying as the sun climbs.
The dome is 425 feet of exposed granite, the second-largest bathholith in the US. The granite is 1 billion years old. At night the rock creaks and groans as it cools — sounds the Tonkawa people attributed to spirits, giving the rock its name. Early spring for bluebonnets, fall for long shadows and deeper pink. Weekends fill early — reservations required, the park turns away cars once capacity is hit.
Sturdy shoes, water, sunscreen. The exposure is real. The wind at the top earns your jacket. Get there for dawn — the pink granite catching first light with nobody else on the summit is the version worth the drive.
